Anaesthetics

What we do

The Anaesthetics service provides 24-hour perioperative services encompassing  pre-anaesthetic assessment, intra-operative anaesthesia, acute pain management, anaesthesia outside the operating suite and teaching and education throughout the hospital.

We are committed to evidence-based best practice, continuous quality improvement, research and teaching.

Bendigo Health is associated with the recognised training programme for medical practitioners who wish to become Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA). Registrars rotate from major teaching hospitals in Melbourne.

Who we care for

The department of anaesthesia provides anaesthetic services for more than 11,000 operative procedures per year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We provide care to patients in our eight main operating theatres as well as our other procedure rooms catering for all major types of adult and paediatric surgery, excluding cardiac and neurosurgery.

What to expect

An anaesthetist will see you before the procedure commences to discuss your concerns and assess your fitness for anaesthesia.

Your anaesthetist will stay with you at all times during your procedure.

Your anaesthetist will deliver you to the Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (also known as Recovery Room) where you will continue you post procedure recovery until you are ready for discharge to DOSA or one of the wards in the hospital.
