Day of Surgery Admissions (DOSA)

The Day of Surgery Admissions unit admits all patients for theatre, provides an endoscopy service as well as providing pre and post-operative care for a range of surgical specialty patients. Surgical specialties in our Interventional Suite include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible cystoscopy and bronchoscopy.

What we do

Treat adult surgical patients, endoscopy patients, recover patients post procedure and post anaesthetic, discharge day procedure patients and make referral appointment.

We also have an expanding Day Surgery service that will discharge our patients home into the care of a support person on the same day as their surgical procedure.

Who we care for

Patients on their surgical journey, DOSA admit patients who will have their surgical procedure and then cares for then until they go on to the ward for recovery or are safe to go home.

What to bring

When you come in on your day for admission, please bring your Medicare card and your letter from patient services if you have one.

If you are staying overnight please bring an overnight bag and toiletries, try to leave any unnecessary valuables at home.

How to access the service

Many of our patients will receive a letter before their admission date, this letter will provide information including a time to present at reception. Closer to your date our team will look at the times for procedures and if we are able to reduce your wait. If this is possible we will advise you the business day prior to your surgery and allocate a new arrival time for you.

DOSA tries best to stagger our patient admissions so that our patients are able to avoid unnecessary waiting times.

What happens when I arrive?

Our receptionist will greet you and confirm your details, before our nursing team admit you. This involves confirming your identity, assessing your health, asking questions and taking your vital signs, such as temperature and pulse, blood pressure and measuring your weight and height.

Then you will dress in surgical attire which includes a gown, feet covers and a hair cover, and wait for your theatre to be ready for you. In this time you can ask the nurse any questions you have and share any concerns. You can tell us if you are in pain or cold, or not feeling well.
