Electroencephalograph (EEG)

What we do

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An EEG records the electric patterns of the brain (brainwaves). These tests are useful to help diagnose and manage a number of different conditions including seizures. Having an EEG is pain free and takes approximately one hour. Hair will need to be clean, dry and free from any hair product. No caffeine is to be consumed within 8 hours of the procedure such as tea, coffee, cola, or energy drinks. No fasting is required and normal medications should be taken. For children, a favourite toy, blanket, or other comfort item should be included.  Electronic devices such as iPads are not permitted as they are too interactive.

Sleep Deprived Electroencephalogram

This is a test that records the natural electrical patterns of the brain (brainwaves) when electrodes are attached to the scalp. This test is designed to help with diagnosis of seizures, epilepsy, head injuries, dizziness, headaches, brain tumours and sleeping problems. Your Doctor will ask you to stay awake the night before your test. You will be required to be driven to your appointment as you should not operate a vehicle.

For children, the following is suggested;

  • Under 5 years  - if your child usually has a daytime sleep, make the appointment for that time and keep them awake on that day until their test.
  • Aged 5-12 years  - a few hours’ sleep only.  Suggested sleep times would be between 10pm and 5am.  An early morning appointment time will be scheduled.
  • Aged 13-16 years  - minimal sleep only.  Suggested sleep times would be between midnight and 5am.  An early morning appointment time will be scheduled.

A referral from your health care provider is required for all tests. For enquiries or to make a booking contact 5454 8017.
