Be Your Best: health in harmony
Singing has always been an important part of Megan Kane Griffin's life, and it's a creative outlet she can turn to in her nursing career.

Choosing a career as a graduate during a pandemic can feel like a perilous pursuit. Megan also nursed the delightful dilemma of being a classically-trained and passionate opera singer since the age of 11.

So it was a leap of faith when she chose her career as a Nurse in Anaesthetics and Recovery in 2020, and happily has no regrets. Her singing came into play as a creative outlet during an incredibly stressful year where on top of everything else, Megan lost her Dad.

“Everyone that I worked with was really supportive, and helped me get through it.

“I love the diversity of the job; every day is different and I feel like I’m always learning and being there with patients, often who are getting life-changing procedures. It’s all about team work so lots of communication and all advocating for patients at once,” she said.

Megan says by prioritising her mental health and making time for singing, she was able to manage much better. “It’s hard juggling work with the creative and social aspects, but also really important.”

Megan also attributes music as healing as everyone can bond over it during stressful times. “It’s a great conversation starter because a lot of people have a love for music or a musical background.”

Although Megan is not singing on the job, the confidence you need to perform and the motivation you need to have to train and improve your skills, is also paramount in her nursing role.

“I think it’s a good thing to keep on striving to get better at things and pushing yourself to improve your skills or your knowledge. There’s always room for improvement in your work practice, and important to bring your own personal motivation to improve your skill set.”
