Community Allied Health Services has launched a program designed to engage people in meaningful group activities.
The Social Support Group (SSG) will allow older people to meet and socialise with others, while enjoying a wide range of activities and outings.
Marilyn Smith who has joined the SSG for a second time following an extended period of isolation with poor health said the program has allowed her to make friends with new people outside her independent living residence.
“You’ve got to get up and get moving, I know I can come here and have a chat with people. I feel comfortable here and I really enjoy it. We play games and do exercises and talk to other people.
“I would say to people who are unsure about calling My Aged Care and accessing the service to give it a go. I absolutely love it,” Marilyn said.
The Planned Activity Group – which forms part of the SSG – draws on an individual’s personal strengths, building their capacity and independence to become involved in their community. The positive, supported environment offers social and respite opportunities for participants and their carers, with the aim of prolonging independent community living.
Brian Raymond, a group carer for the services, enjoys doing activities with people. “We have a bit of fun, everyone has a good day. It’s a really good environment to come to work where everyone smiles,” he said.
The SSG aims to encourage independence, create friendships, reduce isolation and maintain connection to the community. Activities include exercise games, craft, bingo, card games and gardening. The program is facilitated by appropriately trained staff to support participants with activities.
“We do a lot of activities, we really just ask what they would like to do on the day to involve everyone, and we don’t want to exclude anyone. It’s just a very welcoming group,” Brian said.
Community Allied Health Services also delivers the Fitness for Older Adults Program which provides a variety of exercise classes each week in Bendigo for older adults to improve their health, wellbeing and maintain their strength, fitness, balance and mobility.
An assessment is required to determine suitability for participation in the group. Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to access this service.
