Essential education: GPs attend emergency skills workshop
Fifty GPs from across the State recently attended our sixth annual Emergency Department GP skills workshop.

The event, hosted by Bendigo Health’s Emergency Department at La Trobe Rural Health School, is part of the Emergency Medicine Education and Training Program (EMET) of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM)

EMET program Director at Bendigo Health, Dr Wolfgang Merl, said GPs from Horsham to outer suburbs of Melbourne attended the training program.

“The workshop included a wide range of skill stations relevant to daily practice of GPs with a focus on emergency presentations, ranging from adult and paediatric advanced life support, ultrasound, emergency airway management and plastering,” he said.

“Every workshop was conducted by an emergency medicine specialist from Bendigo Health Emergency Department with support of registrars and critical care trained nursing staff, as well as physiotherapist and plaster technicians.”

Dr Merl said the program highlighted the importance of face to face education.

“This program is essential to keep emergency medicine skills of our GPs up to date,” he said.

Bendigo Health has received Commonwealth funding and Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) support for this activity as part of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care - Specialist Training Program.
