Be Your Best: caring for the carers
For Di Price, it’s all about supporting a team that treats her with respect and appreciation.

If you asked Di Price how much she does for Bendigo Health’s Emergency Department (ED), you’d think she never has time to sleep.

In her role as Personal Assistant to the Medical Director and medical staff, it is her mission to go above and beyond her job description.

But for Di, it’s all about supporting a team that treats her with respect and appreciation.

“I just love to be helpful, if I can make someone else’s job easier, I will,” she said.

“And the appreciation I’m shown makes me feel wanted.”

Di is a familiar face to a lot of people across the service, probably because she’s worked in a few different roles in her 16 years.

After almost a decade at Carlisle Wool, she was in the “right place at the right time” to score a casual position as a ward clerk in the Women’s Ward.

From there, an opportunity came up to work in ED, but Di said she was hesitant.

“I’ll be honest, I said I could never work in ED, it felt too daunting,” she said.

“But I did it, I learnt from some great people and I haven’t left.”

On top of her usual duties, Di spends her days ensuring ED is staffed, learning workshops come together and all doctors and nurses have access to snacks during their long shifts on the floor.

“I want to look after people,” she said.

“The staff recharge station was a little thing we could do to make sure our staff, who often times don’t have time to eat, are fuelled in some way.”

All the while, her door is always open for anyone that needs someone to help them emotionally.

“I’m a very good listener,” Di said.

“I have a chair in my office that anyone is welcome to come sit in and share their issues, their exciting news or anything they may need to chat about.

“I never say no to trying to help, and if I can’t I will always try to find someone who can.”

Di said the love she feels from the whole team keeps her coming back.

“Everyone here treats me with respect,” she said.

“I always treat people the way I like to be treated and I definitely get treated so well here.

“I really love coming to work.”
