Cultural birth kits supporting First Nations families

Cultural birth kits supporting First Nations families
Bendigo Health has launched a new initiative supporting First Nations mothers and their newborns to feel culturally safe.

Cultural Birth Kits will be provided to First Nations families who birth at Bendigo Health, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported during one of the most significant moments of their lives.

Culturally Safe Birthing Coordinator, Tammy Nancarrow, explained that the kits are more than just items. They honour culture, welcome new life, and create a safe space to discuss health promotion.

“The kits serve as proactive conversation starters, allowing the Aboriginal Services team to build connections with new mums. The culturally identified resources within the kits make it easier for families to engage with the health information, whether about breastfeeding, newborn care, or general wellbeing.”

Each kit is thoughtfully designed to celebrate culture while providing practical support for new mothers and will include a beautiful tote bag adorned with Connection to Country artwork.

Additionally, the kits contain Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) health promotion resources tailored to First Nations families, offering a gentle and supportive way to share important health information.

Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officers Danika Dale and Jade Heavyside, and Culturally Safe Birthing Coordinator, Tammy Nancarrow are proud of the work they have achieved with the support of the Aboriginal Services team, and see this initiative as a meaningful step toward reconciliation and supporting First Nations families.
