Being on a surgical waiting list does not mean you are simply waiting.

The time before your operation is an important opportunity to prepare for surgery, learn what to expect and take steps that can support your recovery.

At Bendigo Health, patients are encouraged to take an active role in preparing for surgery.

"Patients don't simply wait for surgery. It's about opportunities to actively prepare," Patient Support Unit Lead Andrew Symes said.

“Preparing for surgery can help you feel more confident, improve your recovery and reduce the risk of complications. Your healthcare team will guide you through what you need to do before your operation,” said Andrew.

Before your surgery you may be asked to:

  • attend appointments and complete any required tests
  • tell your healthcare team about your health conditions, allergies and medicines
  • follow instructions about eating and drinking before your operation
  • speak with your doctor before changing or stopping any medicines
  • ask questions if there is anything you do not understand.

You can also prepare by:

  • staying as healthy and active as possible
  • planning how you will get home after your operation
  • thinking about who can support you during your recovery
  • writing down any questions you would like to ask your healthcare team.

Every patient's needs are different, so it is important to follow the advice provided for your specific procedure.

If you need help understanding information about your care, interpreter services are available. Bendigo Health encourages patients to use professional interpreters for important medical information so you can feel informed and confident about your treatment.

If you become unwell, develop an infection or cannot attend an appointment, contact Bendigo Health as soon as possible. This helps your healthcare team provide the right advice and plan your care safely.

Patient Support Unit Nurse Unit Manager Bonnie Sheard said preparation helps patients feel more involved and informed before surgery.

"Patients are now supported to prepare for surgery rather than simply wait for it," Ms Sheard said.

"We'll support every patient, while helping them take an active role in their own healthcare and become as healthy as they can be before surgery."
