A new facility that will house Bendigo Health’s Cancer Wellness Program has been officially named the Gobbé Wellness Centre.
The centre is named in honour of the Gobbé family for their significant contribution to health services in our region.
The Gobbé family, like many in the region, had their own cancer battle. It was during their time with Bendigo Health and the Oncology unit that their dream of creating a Wellness Centre began.
The Gobbés made a significant financial contribution to the centre through a donation and a gift in their Will.
Helen Gobbé said the passing of her husband, Alan, in 2018 cemented the idea of the Wellness Centre.
“I’m so pleased to see my husband’s name up there. To see the centre come together in my lifetime has been a privilege,” she said.
“We’ll bring some joy and relief to people and that will be my pleasure to have done that. Having my name up there is just a bonus.”
Bendigo Health Board Chair, Bob Cameron thanked the Gobbés for their generosity.
“We are fortunate enough to have a large Cancer Centre in Bendigo and every great Cancer Centre has a Wellness Centre. It’s great that we are able to repurpose this fantastic old building and bring it back to life to support patients in their cancer journey,” he said.
The Cancer Wellness Program provides complementary therapies that help patients and their families through their cancer journey.
Activities like art therapy, oncology massage and reflexology will be based in the Wellness Centre, which will have a library, sleeping pods and quiet spaces for patients and families to relax in.
The Cancer Wellness Program will re-launch in early 2021.
